Once in a while, as a photographer, you get to witness someone see them self as you saw them. You get to watch them respond to your picture. You get to watch them react to their friends’ reactions. It’s a delicate moment that has the potential to go either way, and it always scares me. I got to experience this when I watched Likhapha Monica Faku see the picture I made of her for the Fred Hutchinson website.
I was attending a HVTN banquet last night in Cape Town. I stepped outside of the ballroom to see about snagging a glass of wine when I found my coworker Deborah Bach showing Likhapha the story and picture on her Ipad. Likhapha was sitting with her friends as she gazed into the surface of Deb’s Ipad. She got a big grin on her face and excitedly started showing her friends. I was thrilled to the point of tears.
